REFRACTIVE & CORNEA

LASIK

What is LASIK?
  • LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomilieusis
  • It is a type of laser refractive surgery for the correction of myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism
  • Femto LASIK uses a femtosecond laser to create a highly precise hinged flap vs traditional LASIK which uses a mechanical cutting tool
  • An excimer laser is then used to reshape the underlying cornea and correct your refractive error
Am I eligible for LASIK?
  • A suitable candidate will need to be at 18 years of age
  • Have a stable glasses prescription for at least 2 years
  • Have healthy eyes, is not pregnant and in good general health
  • Dependent on your occupation, sporting and recreational activities
  • For those who are not suitable, alternative options include PRK, ICL and refractive lens exchange
Will I be completely glasses or contact lens free?
  • This depends on your age and visual requirements
  • Near vision deteriorates in all people over the age of forty. Monovision is an option for those who want to have LASIK to get rid of their reading glasses
  • Cataract development occurs in your 50-60s
How long does LASIK take?
  • Only takes a few minutes on each eye (both eyes can be done on the same day)
  • You will need to be at the laser centre for a few hours for pre and postoperative checks
What are the risks of LASIK?
  • As with any surgery, there are always risks, though they are uncommon. Possible risks include:
    • Loss of best corrected vision
    • Corneal infection or ectasia (thinning)
    • Flap related complications
    • Dry eye
    • Dysphotopsia (night vision difficulties of glare/halos)
    • Regression or refractive inaccuracy – which may require retreatment
Why have LASIK over PRK?
  • Minimal discomfort and shorter healing time than PRK
  • Less time off work
  • Quicker improvement in vision
How much does LASIK cost?
  • Cost will vary depending on the type of procedure and individual requirements
  • Laser eye surgery is an elective procedure and is not covered by Medicare, however some private health insurers offer rebates
  • In Australia, LASIK typically costs between $2600 – $3500 per eye. Should retreatment be required, there is no additional charge, depending on the circumstance
