REFRACTIVE & CORNEA
ICL
What is an ICL?
- Implantable collamer lens, also known as an intraocular contact lens
- Implanted into the eye to correct myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism
Am I suitable for an ICL?
- This is an option for those who are not suitable for laser eye surgery (LASIK or PRK) due to high myopia (>10.0 D), high astigmatism or high hypermetropia (+10.0 D)
- ICL is suitable for those who have thin corneas and deep anterior chambers
What are the benefits of an ICL?
- The procedure is reversible – it can be removed
- Your natural lens remains in place, which means you maintain your normal ability to focus at different distances
- It is a painless and minimally invasive procedure
- Short recovery time, quick improvement in vision
How is the surgery performed?
- ICL surgery is performed as a day surgery
- A very small opening is created to allow for the ICL to be inserted and injected into the eye
- Once inside the eye, the ICL unfolds and is positioned behind the iris and in front of the lens
- No sutures are required due to the small incision
- Procedure takes about 30 minutes
How much does ICL surgery cost?
- ICL surgery is an elective surgery and is not covered by Medicare or private health insurance
- The cost varies according to you prescription, in general the approximate cost is $5000-$6000 per eye
