OCULOPLASTICS
Entropion & Ectropion
What are entropion and ectropion?
- Entropion is when the eyelid turns inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye.
- Ectropion is when the eyelid turns outward, causing the inner part of the eyelid to be exposed.
- Both conditions are more common in older adults and can cause discomfort or eye problems if left untreated.
What are the symptoms?
- Entropion: feeling like something is in your eye, redness or irritation, watery eyes, sensitivity to light
- Ectropion: dry and irritated eyes, excess tearing, redness, exposure of inner eyelid
How can you treat it?
For both entropion and ectropion, mild cases may be managed with:
- Lubricating eye drops
- Ointments
- Temporary taping of the eyelid
In moderate to severe cases, surgery is usually the best option to:
- Restore normal eyelid position
- Protect the eye from further damage
- Improve comfort and appearance
Surgery is typically a quick outpatient procedure with a high success rate.
