NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY
About Neuro-ophthalmology
Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty that focuses on how the eyes, brain and the nervous system work together. Some vision problems are not caused by the eyes themselves, but by the nerves or brain pathways that control vision.
A neuro-ophthalmologist is a doctor trained in both neurology and ophthalmology, helping to diagnose and manage complex conditions that affect sight.
What conditions does a Neuro-Ophthalmologist treat?
- Sudden or unexplained vision loss.
- Double vision
- Abnormal eye movements
- Optic nerve problems (like inflammation or swelling)
- Pupil abnormalities (unequal pupil size or reactions)
- Visual field loss
- Brain tumours or stroke affecting vision
- Migraine-related vision symptoms
- Multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurological diseases
- Myasthenia gravis
- Increased pressure in the brain
What can I expect at my appointment?
A neuro-ophthalmic evaluation is detailed and may take longer than a typical eye exam. It may include:
- Comprehensive eye examination
- Visual field testing
- Eye movement and pupil assessments
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
- Fundus photography
- Blood tests or imaging (MRI, CT scans), if needed
Our goal is to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms and guide you through the appropriate treatment or referral pathway
