About Strabismus

What is strabismus?

Strabismus is a condition where there is a misalignment of the eyes. While it is commonly associated with children, adults can also develop or continue to have strabismus, which may lead to:

  • Double vision (diplopia).
  • Poor depth perception.
  • Eye strain or fatigue.
  • Headaches
  • qSocial or cosmetic concerns

 

What can cause adult strabismus?
  • Childhood strabismus that was never fully corrected
  • Stroke or brain injury
  • Nerve palsies (3rd, 4th, or 6th cranial nerve)
  • Thyroid eye disease
  • Myasthenia Gravis
  • Diabetes
  • Trauma
  • Neurological or muscular conditions
What are the treatment options?

There are both non-surgical and surgical options depending on the type and severity of strabismus:
Non-surgical:

  • Prism glasses – Help align images and reduce double vision
  • Vision therapy – Eye exercises to improve muscle control in certain cases
  • Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections – Temporarily weaken overactive eye muscles

Non-surgical:

  • Eye muscle surgery – Adjusts the position or strength of eye muscles to realign the eyes
