About Strabismus
What is strabismus?
Strabismus is a condition where there is a misalignment of the eyes. While it is commonly associated with children, adults can also develop or continue to have strabismus, which may lead to:
- Double vision (diplopia).
- Poor depth perception.
- Eye strain or fatigue.
- Headaches
- qSocial or cosmetic concerns
What can cause adult strabismus?
- Childhood strabismus that was never fully corrected
- Stroke or brain injury
- Nerve palsies (3rd, 4th, or 6th cranial nerve)
- Thyroid eye disease
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Diabetes
- Trauma
- Neurological or muscular conditions
What are the treatment options?
There are both non-surgical and surgical options depending on the type and severity of strabismus:
Non-surgical:
- Prism glasses – Help align images and reduce double vision
- Vision therapy – Eye exercises to improve muscle control in certain cases
- Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections – Temporarily weaken overactive eye muscles
Non-surgical:
- Eye muscle surgery – Adjusts the position or strength of eye muscles to realign the eyes
