OCULOPLASTICS
SKIN CANCERS
What Is Oculoplastic Surgery?
Oculoplastic surgeons are eye doctors (ophthalmologists) with advanced training in plastic and reconstructive surgery around the eyes. They are the best specialists to treat skin cancers that affect the eyelids or nearby areas.
SKIN CANCERS
Common skin cancers near the eyes
- Basal cell carcinoma: The most common eyelid cancer. Usually slow growing
- Squamous cell carcinoma: May grow faster and spread if not treated.
- Melanoma: A serious type of skin cancer that can develop on or near the eyelids.
What are the signs to watch for?
If you notice any of the following near your eye, see your GP, optometrist or dermatologist/specialist:
- A new bump or lump that doesn’t go away
- A sore that bleeds or won’t heal
- Loss of eyelashes in one area
- Changes in skin colour or texture
- Swelling or irritation
If you notice any unusual spots, bumps, or skin changes near your eyes, don’t wait. Most eyelid cancers can be treated successfully when caught early.
Diagnosis: the first step is a biopsy
If a suspicious lesion is found near your eye, the first step is usually a biopsy. This is a simple procedure where a small sample of the lesion is removed and examined under a microscope to determine if it is cancerous and what type of skin cancer it may be.
The results of the biopsy help guide the next steps in your treatment plan. This can be done in room at our clinic.
How are these skin cancers treated?
- Surgical removal: The cancer is removed along with a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue
- Reconstructive surgery: After the cancer is removed, the area is carefully rebuilt to restore eyelid function and appearance.
