REFRACTIVE & CORNEA

PRK

What is PRK?
  • PRK stands for photorefractive keratectomy
  • Also known as advanced surface laser ablation (ASLA)
  • A type of laser refractive surgery for the correction of myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism
  • The epithelium (layer of cells covering the cornea) is gently removed first – this can be done with the excimer laser (Trans-PRK: transepithelial PRK) or manually
  • The same excimer laser is then used to reshape the underlying cornea and correct your refractive error
  • A ‘bandage’ contact lens is placed on the eye afterwards to assist epithelial regeneration, which usually takes three to four days
Why have PRK over LASIK?
  • You do not qualify for LASIK (prescription too high, lifestyle)
  • Patients with thinner corneas or dry eyes may be more suitable for PRK
  • Eliminates flap related complications
  • You engage in contact sports or have an occupation where there is high risk of flap dislodgment
  • PRK is the less expensive option
How much does PRK cost?
  • Cost will vary depending on the type of procedure and individual requirements
  • Laser eye surgery is an elective procedure and is not covered by Medicare, however some private health insurers offer rebates
  • In Australia, PRK typically costs between $2300 – $3200, per eye. Should retreatment be required, there is no additional charge, depending on the circumstance
