Ptosis (Droopy Eyelid)
What Is ptosis?
- Ptosis is the medical term for a drooping upper eyelid
- It can affect one or both eyes
- May be present from birth or develop over time.
- A ptosis can block your vision or make your eyes look uneven or tired
What causes It?
- Aging – the most common cause, as eyelid muscles can stretch or weaken over time
- Present at birth – congenital ptosis
- Nerve or muscle problems – such as myasthenia gravis or nerve damage
- Injury or eye surgery
- Lumps or tumours near the eye (rare)
How Is ptosis diagnosed?
Your eye doctor will examine your eyelids, eye movement, and vision. Sometimes special tests are done to check for underlying causes.
How Is ptosis treated?
Treatment depends on how severe it is and what is causing it.
- Mild cases – may not need treatment if vision isn’t affected
- Moderate to severe cases – surgery is the most common and effective treatment
In children, ptosis can lead to vision problems if not treated early
