Dr Michael Shiu is one of Australia’s leading specialists in the treatment of general eye diseases including cataract, refractive laser surgery and macular degeneration.

He is highly passionate about educating patients in general eye health and restoring vision.

Dr Shiu is also well regarded for his world class management of glaucoma. He is very experienced in managing complex cases and leads the way in latest treatments available.

Born and raised in Hong Kong and Australia, Dr Shiu speaks multiple languages including English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Fellowship and Training

Dr Shiu commenced his fellowship training in Ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne and became the Glaucoma fellow at the same time.

He was a staff specialist in the Glaucoma Clinic at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He is currently a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Australian and New Zealand Glaucoma Interest Group.

Dr Shiu has been examiner at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists plus provides training and lecturing for the Australian College of Optometry.

Giving back and helping the community

Dr Shiu has a strong interest in developing world ophthalmology. He frequently contributes to overseas voluntary eye surgery programs like Vietnam Vision Project, Eye for Africa, Australian Health Humanitarian Aid, and teaching programs such as Sight For All. He truly believes if you can help one person, they can help their own.

Dr Shiu’s biggest reward is helping people see again. Giving back to people is the best part of his work.

He currently has practices in Doncaster, Brighton, East Melbourne, Essendon and Bendigo.
